Summary
of CECnet Commands and Listserv Etiquette
1. To send a new message to CECnet:
Simply send the
message to <cecnet@listserv.arizona.edu>.
In the "subject"
line on the heading, clearly identify your subject or the subject of
the message to which you are replying. Avoid meaningless subject lines
such as "your mail" or "miscellaneous." Be clear
and succinct.
2. To reply to
a message you saw on CECnet:
If you use the "reply"
command in your mail editor, remember that your response will be sent
to EVERYONE who is subscribed to the list. You can also direct your
response to everyone by sending a new message to <cecnet@listserv.arizona.edu>.
3. To reply directly
to an individual:
Many times it may
not be appropriate to reply to the entire listserv. An example may be
in responding to a specific request from another individual. In this
case, search out the individual's address (it is listed in your headings
under "FROM") and send your response ONLY to the person who
sent the original message. Do not reply to all recipients. This will
save much frustration for the rest of the listserv members and embarrassment
for the sender. (On many systems, the "Reply" or "Reply
to Sender" feature will automatically send your reply to the entire
listserv and not just to the sender of the original message.)
4. Long documents:
Please do not post
long documents or file attachments. These can be confusing to open and
view. Please post shorter messages, providing summaries or indicating
that the long documents or attachments are available (perhaps on a Web
site). If other subscribers want that information, they may contact
you privately.
5. Subscriber
option commands:
It is important
to remember that each listserv has two addresses, one for messages to
all CECnet subscribers and one for commands related to the operation
of the listserv.
To SEND A MESSAGE
to the entire listserv group, use:
cecnet@listserv.arizona.edu
To SEND A COMMAND
(to subscribe, unsubscribe, suspend, etc.), use:
listserv@listserv.arizona.edu
For any of the following
commands, it is not necessary to put your email address in your message
since the listserv will be able to find the information it needs. Also,
do not add any other comments to your command, including signature files.
If at any point
you wish to review the current status of your subscription options,
send an email command to <listserv@listserv.arizona.edu>.
Leave the subject line blank. In the message area, write only:
query cecnet
5a. To Subscribe:

To get messages
you missed, send for the month's log with the message:

replacing "yymm"
with the final two digits of the year (yy) and the month in two-digit
form (mm).
For example, for
the log for September 1998 you would type: get cecnet log9809
5e. To confirm
receipt of a message:
Send an email command
to <listserv@listserv.arizona.edu>.
Leave the subject line blank.
If in your message,
you write:
set cecnet repro
the listserv will
send you a copy of your own messages.
If in your message,
you write:
set cecnet ack
the listserv will
mail you a short acknowledgement of your message.
To turn off acknowledgements
completely, depending on which of the above two options you initially
selected, write:
set cecnet norepro
or
set cecnet noack
6. Archives:
Archives of all
CECnet messages are available for access through the Udall Center's
Web site at <http://listserv.arizona.edu/archives/cecnet.html>.
You can also find
summaries of the number of subscribers and subscriber affiliation by
profession and nationality on the Web site.
Alternatively, you
can retrieve the log for a given month by sending the command:
get cecnet logyymm
replacing "yymm"
with the final two digits of the year (yy) and the month in two-digit
form (mm).
